Imagine for a second, a mad king ascends to the throne and tries to steal something from the sparsely populated, beautiful North. The southern subjects that claimed it are thrown into uproar and it soon precipitates into a chaotic usurpation. Meanwhile, a silent enemy from the frozen and vast wastelands further north, that everyone in the kingdom once united against now secretly stir, using the discord to press their advantage.
One might be forgiven for thinking that’s the plot of the famous Novel series, “A song of Ice and Fire” or as the TV buffs would call it, Game of Thrones. However, by some ludicrous series of events, it is simply current affairs. It has been said, that art imitates life, but evidently the powers that be seem to have neither the guile nor the patience to undertake the strain of either art or imitation, and so they have invented their own original form of art, the dumpster fire that we now know to be Donald Trump’s foreign policy in 2026.
It is common courtesy when criticising, to first list the merits, and to its credit, the current US policy is easily described in few words; Inexplicable, confounding, moronic, myopic, just to name a few, and additionally, it retains the hallmark of classical themes from the past, especially from the current POTUS’s previous stint in the office, namely, self-sabotaging, bullying, unsustainable, unethical and verging on treason while bringing a fresh new breath of petty and brinksmanship. With the benefit of hindsight, with a roster of merits like that, it hardly seems appropriate to list the criticism. While the reports of domestic actions of ICE, acting as they are within the US rings another, more uncomfortable bell, if there is one thing recent events have taught the world, it is that in the grand arena of geopolitics, one’s own business is better minded by oneself, lest someone else come and do it for them.
So, while West(eros) spirals into the most monumental and dare I say entertaining fallout since the Depp vs Heard case. The channels are buzzing with reports of Trump being a Russian plant and Israel and Russia using the Epstein files as leverage, as far as the realms of proof is concerned, all of it seems to be conjecture. However, the massive deployment and serious telegraphing of and EU military action in Greenland along with the meeting of the Danish and Greenland Foreign Ministers with Vice-President JD Vance is an undeniable and frankly concerning series of events that no one expected to see anytime this decade.
While under the current governance, the US might is spearheaded by the POTUS’s tweets instead of SAD/SOG and JSOC actions, and adding a reporter to a text chain of high command discussing military operations remains a crown jewel of the consummate professionalism of this administration, it is hard to see why would Mr. President want to create a public spectacle of this event. It is plain to see that the relentless demand for Greenland has little, if not nothing to do with national security since US already has privileged military access and bases there, however, even in the “humour me” department, either for security or minerals, had Washington demanded it behind closed doors, a gradual procurements of rights might have allowed US to get in like they have done countless times before elsewhere. A public demand and then doubling down on threats has made it a matter of national and even existential pride for the Kingdom of Denmark and the EU alike. Meaning, under no scenario where Donald Trump has not backed down and still remains in office, does this not precipitate into a gunfight.
Earlier mention of this being Donald Trump’s foreign policy was intentional, since despite its sketchy record, USA has always known which tool suits which job and more importantly, the fact that sledgehammer suits very few. Not for naught has the US congress scrambled and reports of top military brass ignoring the POTUS have been floating around along with calls to defy illegal orders. EU has started calls to open channels with Moscow and even threats are being issued and warning shots are being fired using tariffs. President Tactful has subtly declared tariffs on EU nations as a punitive action for opposing his bullying and EU has hinted a stalling of trade between them and the US should that bridge find itself in the need to be crossed.
Making good on the opportunity, Moscow has finally started offering olive branches and what can only be described as a scene from a Sitcom, has offered to support EU troops in Greenland against the US. Just to grasp the state of affairs, should US invade Greenland, EU might very well find themselves in a losing war against the very entity that powers their military by and large, while facing their self-created insecurity of a Russian assault. The Russian offer might seem ridiculous to the majority of people, but the devil doesn’t bid for a soul unless its on sale. Russia brings with it the one thing EU and their cult behaviour for the majority of the last century have given up, independent and battle tested technology.
A real threat of war from the war-savvy architects of your defence grids, LRUs, Engines and whole platforms is a military leader’s worst nightmare, one which is currently glaring every army in EU, and while the tariff wars last year was a wake-up call for them to start re-igniting their indigenous defence industries, this new development comes far too soon for it to be anything but an unmitigated existential threat and might push them into the arms of their hitherto enemies. New Delhi had the right idea in moving to “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-reliant India) a lesson learnt the hard way dover decades. Even today, critical Indian projects hang in balance and at the mercy of American OEMs. While indigenous projects are not beyond reproach, the overall attitude of the current administration in Washington has been anything but supportive, and has worked well to push an India that was warming up to US, back to their Russian partners.
All things considered, one is forced to acknowledge that this chain of events is playing out all too well for Moscow and whether the reports hold some merit after all. Donald Trump’s reactions to every enquiry on the Epstein files seem to only corroborate the narrative, true or not. Be that as it may be, it can only remain in the realms of conjecture for us mortals, but one thing is for sure, the season on western dominance is coming to an end and in the ancient lands of the East, dragons doth stir, and we can only play the watchers on the wall.
