The case for security by design in Artificial Intelligence

Quantum breakthroughs could break the cryptographic systems that protect AI models, data pipelines and authentication mechanisms. Even well designed AI systems could be compromised at a large scale. Security by design can avoid systemic risks that may otherwise be irreversible and harness AI’s potential safely and responsibly.

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly embedded in critical infrastructure and high stakes decision making systems, integrating security from the ground up is no longer optional it is imperative. Discussions at Cyberweek event, Tel Aviv include insights from former CIA Chief Technology Officer Bob Flores, he states, there are risks of treating AI security as an afterthought rather than a foundational requirement.

The early Internet offers a cautionary lesson. Built without native security mechanisms, it later became fertile ground for cybercrime, systemic exploitation, and illicit digital economies. AI, with its autonomy, scalability, and growing influence across sectors, risks repeating this mistake on a far more consequential scale. A single architectural vulnerability in an AI system could cascade across financial institutions, national defense networks, or healthcare systems, creating damage that is complex, widespread, and difficult to reverse.

The threat landscape surrounding AI is already expanding. AI assisted malware, autonomous agents capable of infiltrating sensitive systems, data poisoning during model training, supply chain compromises and hardware level exploits all represent serious risks. When security is bolted on after deployment, these vulnerabilities multiply, becoming harder to detect, isolate, and remediate over time.

At the same time, AI holds immense potential to strengthen cybersecurity when designed securely. Properly architected AI systems can enhance identity verification, automate threat detection, and establish trusted frameworks that improve resilience across digital ecosystems. Realizing these benefits requires treating security as a core design principle rather than a reactive patch applied after systems are already in use.

Equally important is the need for standardized governance and security frameworks. Fragmented approaches across organizations and national borders create exploitable gaps that adversaries can easily leverage. Coordinated, consistent security standards are essential to building AI systems that are trustworthy, interoperable, and resilient at a global scale.

The urgency is further amplified by advances in quantum computing. Future quantum breakthroughs have the potential to undermine today’s cryptographic foundations, exposing AI models, data pipelines, and authentication systems to compromise. Even well engineered AI systems could be rendered vulnerable at scale, eroding trust in critical digital infrastructure.

Geopolitically, China is at the forefront of cyber and AI capabilities. China has made substantial investments in quantum technologies and maintains sophisticated cyber units capable of targeting critical infrastructure and AI research worldwide. The United States leads in both cyber defence and offensive capabilities, with government agencies and private sector innovators developing advanced tools that can either secure AI systems or exploit adversarial weaknesses. Russia, too, possesses proven cyber capabilities that could disrupt AI enabled systems. As competition intensifies across AI and quantum domains, the risk of large-scale AI compromise grows, reinforcing the need for security by design and international cooperation.

Ultimately, securing AI is not just a technical concern it is a strategic necessity. Weak or compromised AI systems can sabotage national defense and security infrastructure while simultaneously destabilizing financial systems and endangering healthcare networks. Embedding security at the core of AI design is essential to protecting national interests, preserving economic stability, safeguarding human lives, and maintaining trust in the intelligent systems that increasingly underpin modern society.
